Dr. Dawn Sowers is a speech-language pathologist with 25 years experience in working with individuals who benefit from AAC. She specializes in the area of AAC, with a special interest in individuals with motor impairment. Her work also includes those with brain based visual impairments. Her research focuses on the intersection of motor access to AAC with language, cognition and social interactions.
With this wealth of expertise, Dr. Sowers will guide us in rethinking access design for individuals with multiple disabilities.
This workshop will challenge attendees to think systematically about motor and visual access related to aided AAC system design for individuals with multiple disabilities. Decision-making around access issues will be highlighted with practical tools and frameworks for discussion and use. Current research using AI to individualize and optimize AAC will be presented, including an innovative “off screen” approach to support interactions for these individuals.
