Floating Communication Boards

What’s more relaxing than a cool splash in a swimming pool? Many students using AAC benefit physically from pool time, but the bottom line for them...it’s fun! However, all that H2O is a barrier to using speech generating devices and many low-tech systems. So, how can kids tell you “Dunk me again!”; “fast”; “slow”; “Can I lay in the sun for a few minutes?”; or “Get the noodle!”? You can create a water-friendly communication board by laminating an appropriate layout and attaching it to a kickboard or Styrofoam tray using brass brads. If you cut holes in the paper before laminating, you can put the brads through the laminate alone, thereby avoiding the issue of water seeping in and ruining the paper. We’ve also seen boards printed on iron-on transfers and made into T-shirts that the partner can wear! Now, you won’t have to throw out communication with the pool water!
