General Education

The general education environment promotes participation in future inclusive environments, encourages appropriate social behaviors, increases positive affect and motivation, and encourages compassion and understanding of differences among the whole school population. However, whether a student using AAC is fully or partially included, the general education environment brings its own set of challenges. These may include:

  • additional communication channels that must be maintained
  • additional curriculum to be addressed
  • peer interactions to cultivate
  • varying attitudes toward persons with disabilities

The Transition Team is available to assist you in making inclusive opportunities the best they can be. We can help develop and plan for ideas concerning:

  • communicating with general education staff
  • organizing information and materials
  • modification planning and supplemental resource creation and/or acquisition
  • assessment (modifications, portfolios, etc.)
  • participation planning
  • peer facilitation
  • staff and peer training

If you have any ideas or strategies that have worked well for you within the general education environment, let us know! We would love to help pass them on to others who are also looking for successful inclusion strategies.
