Devices
Here are a few of the many speech generating devices available.
“AAC doesn’t make successful people; people make AAC successful.” (David Chapple in ‘Speaking Up and Spelling It Out’) So, how do we mere mortals become more successful with using and supporting AAC? By working together and sharing knowledge and experiences!
What surfaces in you when someone brings up the communication device of a student with whom you are working?
- Mortal fear?
- Questions about how the device operates?
- Confusion about how to utilize the device in everyday situations?
- Uncertainty about how the device fits into the big picture?
As always, you are not alone! The Transition Team recognizes that there are many aspects to supporting the use of communication devices in educational settings, and we are, therefore, available to provide the following:
- Trainings on basic device features to get you up and running
- Trainings on specific or more detailed device features that are key to supporting a particular student
- Participation planning sessions to determine how the device may be incorporated into the day in a way that will be successful
- Discussions about how the device fits into the big picture and answer questions and concerns that need to be addressed before getting into technical details
- Facilitating discussions on device vocabulary structure and how to maintain the device and if, when, and how to add to it
