Here's a fun tidbit from the past two weeks—September 19th is international Talk Like a Pirate Day. The instigators of this day claim that their purpose is because it is so fun to talk like a pirate. So what are some other things that we do "just for fun?" Brownielocks has a comprehensive list of special events, recognitions and official days, weeks and months.

This past month we saw the 25th anniversary of the smiley :-)! It got me thinking about how expressing emotions electronically has evolved. This site has lists of hundreds emoticons and even a smiley font. Providing students who use AAC with these images may be a way to spice up a written language activity.

The Bridge students and staff came back from summer break to a renovated and expanded facility. We added instructional space and provided desk space for all of our program staff on site. Take a look at our Students In Action in the new space—as well as some great action shots taken during the construction.

First Open Lab for the 2007-08 Year: October 6th
Open Labs are an opportunity for professionals, students, and families to have hands-on time with current assistive technology. Members of The Bridge School staff provide information and guidance to help explore a wide variety of materials and tools. In addition to unstructured exploration each Open Lab provides lectures, discussions and hands-on workshops focusing on specific topics led by members of the Outreach and Transition Programs
1st AAC Awareness Week
October is international AAC Awareness month. The United States Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (USSAAC) is celebrating with events hosted across the country. Please go to the website for more information about how you can participate and spread the word about AAC.
AAC and All that Jazz
February 21 - 23, 2008 in New Orleans, help support AAC communities affected by hurricanes in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Work with USSAAC members, as well as professionals and families from affected areas before, during and after the conference.
